Saint Thomas' Episcopal School

Construction and Renovation Update

We are delighted to announce that we have received a letter of obligation from FEMA indicating that our grant has been approved for funding. This is the step we have been waiting for to begin construction on our new academic building. This week we will receive a letter from the Texas Division of Emergency Management giving us formal approval to begin construction. Below is an update on the project details and timeline.

Construction Timeline
Our architects, Merriman Holt Powell (MHP), and construction firm, Tellepsen, have been on stand-by and are ready to begin as early as mid-July. Below is an estimated timeline for campus construction and opening.

  • July 2020 – Construction on the sanctuary and new academic building begins
  • December 2020 – Sanctuary construction complete in time for the Christmas holiday
  • September 2021 – New three-story academic building complete

Project Funding
As a result of the FEMA grant, STE will receive an approximate net amount of $10,600,000 to assist with costs associated with the flood damage caused by Hurricane Harvey. This amount, in addition to legacy giving, insurance, financial reserves, a grant from the Episcopal Diocese of Texas, and gifts made to our capital campaign, will fund the project.

Our Future Campus
The project will restore our sanctuary, build a new three-story academic building, and add an underground parking garage, replacing buildings lost and damages incurred as a result of Hurricane Harvey. We will also be converting the current upper school building to house our lower school. Once complete, all our students will return to the main campus and our temporary Scotland Yard campus will once again serve as a surface parking lot for our church and school. We know this has been a long and demanding process for our church and school families. We appreciate your patience, prayers, and support along the way. We are grateful for your continued support and blessings, and we look forward to opening our new facilities in a few short months.
