Latin I
This course covers many of the basic word forms, grammar, and vocabulary necessary to read modified versions of Vergil, Livy, Horace, Julius Caesar and Ovid. Students read a continuous story about a Roman family, the Cornelii. The setting is Rome during the reign of the Emperor Titus, 80-81 A.D. Emphasis is placed on acquiring the necessary rudiments and methodology of translation from Latin to English. Elements of Roman culture during the Republic and Empire are also treated.
Text: Ecce Romani I
Latin II
This course completes the students' earlier grasp of grammar and word forms and leads to reading more advanced texts which are still modified versions of original Latin works of authors such as Vergil, Cicero and Caesar. The story of the Cornelii family continues, with emphasis on the stages a young man and young woman go through as they move toward adulthood during the reign of the emperor Titus.
Text: Ecce Romani II
Latin III-IV
This course provides selected readings of unmodified Latin texts from the Late Republic (Eurtropius), Cicero (In Verrem, In Catalinam, De Amicitia), Caesar's Gallic Wars, Catullus poems, Ovid's Metamorphoses, and Vergil's Aeneid.
Text: Ecce Romani III
Latin IV-V (AP Vergil)
This course is designed to meet all the requirements for students to succeed in the AP Vergil exam. Students translate 1856 lines of the Aeneid, read in English the entire Aeneid, and cultivate sight translation skills by reading selections from a variety of Latin authors of classical Roman literature. This concentrated study allows students to earn college credits.
Texts: Pharr's The Aeneid (Books 1-6); Boyd's Aeneid, selections from books 10-12; The Aeneid , Robert Fitzgerald (English translation)
