Junior Classical League
Overview
Junior Classical League (JCL) is open to Latin students in grades six through twelve who are interested. The purpose of JCL is to encourage an interest in and appreciation of the language, literature, and culture of ancient Greece and Rome, and to impart an understanding of the debt of our own culture to that of Classical antiquity. JCL members participate in competitions locally and at the state level.
The JCL teams hold their weekly meetings at lunch time on Wednesdays for middle school and Thursdays for upper school. When preparing for competitions, the teams often meet together on both days.
Competitions
The St. Thomas' JCL teams compete at Rice University's Owl Certamen Tournament as well at Texas State Junior Classical League (TSJCL) competitions. Students not only compete in they typical areas of grammar and vocabulary, but also in the areas of creative arts and athletics. This variety of competitions makes JCL a place for students of many interests and strengths.
Honor Society
The National Latin Honor Society is an organization within the overall umbrella of JCL. This group is open to students whose average Latin grade for the year is 90 or higher. Members are inducted into the group at a JCL meeting in April.
