Sixth Grade

Sixth graders continue reading and poem memorization to enhance their speaking ability and pronunciation. In grammar the study of verbs includes: transitive, intransitive and reflexive verbs, past tense and near future tense, as well as the imperative mood. Grammar study also covers possessive and demonstrative adjectives. Game playing in class enhances learning.

Seventh Grade - French IA

French 1A is designed as the first step for students who wish to begin an adventure in French history, language, and culture. The class covers grammar and vocabulary as well as writing development with continuing work on reading comprehension and French culture.

Eighth Grade - French IB

Students enhance their French skills by learning additional vocabulary, grammar rules, verb tenses, and irregular verbs. The course begins French history studies from the French perspective. This course requires some outside reading, online quizzes, written assignments, verbal presentations, and participation in the Concour Francais National as well as an at-home audio language lab.

Spanish

The Spanish curriculum is intensive, focusing primarily on spoken and written mastery of the Spanish language and the cultural and literary heritage of the Spanish-speaking peoples. Students may elect to take Spanish starting in the fourth grade.

Sixth Grade

Students learn/review the basic grammar points, the alphabet, spelling rules, and how to perform simple math. They learn to read, write, and speak in the present tense using regular -ar, -er, -ir and irregular verbs. 

Labs in 6th grade help students understand the spoken word and improve students' accents.

Seventh Grade - Spanish IA

Students begin their study of Spanish by  reviewing the alphabet, rules of pronunciation and accents, greetings and simple conversations, ordering in a restaurant, counting, and the weather before moving on to more complicated grammar.

Covered this year will be -ar-er-ir and irregular verbs, both in the present and preterite tense, adjectives and adverbs. Ser vs. estar are covered thoroughly as well as direct and indirect object pronouns. The vocabulary comes from lessons on friendships, student life, shopping, time, school activities, eating out, family life, sports, health, the seasons, cultural events, and vacationing. Labs are incorporated into the classroom routine on a regular basis.

Eighth Grade - Spanish IB

Students complete the equivalent of high school Spanish I, which they began studying in 7th Grade. Students become fully competent in the present tense. By the end of the year they start becoming comfortable using the past tenses. Vocabulary ranges from talking about the university, the family, shopping terms,and different types of housing, to food.

Students spend time actively using the language in games and skits. To increase listening comprehension, students are exposed to the different dialects of Spanish by watching videos of native speakers and through their lab work.

Greek

Eighth Grade - Greek I

This class introduces students to the fascinating language and culture of ancient Greece. This class provides an excellent foundation for our focus in 9th grade English on epic literature, Greek I students will read selections from literary and New Testament authors in the original language. In addition, students will improve their vocabulary skills by exploring the many Greek roots which appear in English words.
